Start with the region’s wines
The Istria Tourist Board highlights Malvasia, Teran and Muscat in its introduction to the region’s wines. These names provide a useful starting point for a tasting, especially if this is your first visit to Istria.
Ask your host at the winery about the grapes, the vineyard and the differences between the wines being poured. You do not need a technical vocabulary to enjoy the visit: describing what you like and asking for a comparison can make the experience more personal.
Arrange visits directly with producers
Before setting out, confirm the tasting appointment, language, group size, duration and price with each producer. Opening times and availability can vary. If some of your group do not drink wine, ask about suitable alternatives when you arrange the visit.
Avoid packing too many stops into the day. A single tasting followed by a meal can leave more time for conversation than a rushed circuit of several wineries. Plan transport in advance and choose a designated driver or another suitable way to return to your accommodation.
